Klopp defends Ozil, Gundogan over contentious photo
Criticism on Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan is "absolute nonsense," Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said.
The German duo was pictured with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan just before the World Cup and that drew a barrage of criticism and were even jeered by fans in pre-tournament friendlies.
Ozil is yet to say a word on the issue German Football Association (DFB) president Reinhard Grindel to publicly explain his actions. The general manager Oliver Bierhoff claimed the Arsenal star should have been omitted from the squad altogether that was bound for Russia then. Klopp has now come to their defense.
"The intelligent people of this country demand tolerance. And the others should shut up and not question the boys. Both were certainly not very well advised in this matter. Older, more experienced people should have helped them there. We should not forget that the two of them have Turkish roots even though they grew up here in Germany. But it is the same as always: the one who cries the loudest is the one who hears the most. But that's never been my thing." Klopp told Sports Bild.
Klopp further talked of Borussia Dortmund, his previous club adding that he will be happy if the succeed under their new manager Lucien Favre "Lucien is a great professional and coach.
What he radiates is calm, and that is probably exactly what Borussia needs right now. A very good coach is back in the Bundesliga at a very good club and I will be very happy if it works." he added.
Klopp joined The Reds from Dortmund where he guided the Merseyside club to UEFA Champions League finals and lost to Real Madrid.
