De Bruyne defends Sterling from World Cup criticism
Kevin De Bruyne has defended his Manchester City teammate Raheem Sterling from World Cup criticism.
The duo will face off during the third-place playoffs after stumbling in the semifinals and De Bruyne says that he saw Sterling play wonderfully and the fact that he did not score a goal should not be seen as being a flop. The midfielder asserts that there is more than just scoring in a match.
"I don't understand why you should criticise the people of your own country because, in the end, all they are trying to do is win. I think he did really well in the games that I saw. Obviously, if you don't score a goal, then it's different but not everything in football is about goals." De Bruyne said.
"Hopefully the press and the media can give him the love that he deserves because, obviously, he's a very easy going guy and he gives everything for England – even with the criticism sometimes.” the midfielder added.
De Bruyne, 27, further praised the English winger saying that they clicked very well after joining the EPL defending champions. He hopes that he stays much longer at Etihad.
"I think Raheem [Sterling] is a wonderful player. Since the day that I came to City, he came in the same year, we clicked really well. I think he's very important for what he does at Manchester City and I hope he can stay a lot longer." he said.
After the playoffs, the duo will enjoy a short break before joining teammates in the preseason campaign before league starts on August 11th.
